CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR NEW SUPPORTIVE HOUSING

January 29th, 2010
MISSION – The Province is inviting non-profit societies to submit proposals to manage and operate a transitional housing development on a provincially owned site at 7755 Grand Street in Mission.

Transitional housing is provided to people for up to two or three years, and is the next stage of housing after emergency shelters or other temporary accommodations.

The proposed development will include up to 47 housing units with a range of support services to help people move toward independence and self-sufficiency, breaking the cycle of homelessness. The successful proponent will operate the housing to address the needs of those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Clinical Support will be provided by Fraser Health, Mental Health & Addiction Services.

The deadline for non-profit societies to submit proposals is March 5, 2010. A copy of the Expressions of Interest and supporting documents can be accessed at: http://www.bchousing.org/programs/proposals.

The Province purchased the Grand Street property in January 2009 as part of a series of acquisitions since 2007 to protect and upgrade buildings to provide affordable housing opportunities for those in greatest need. Forty-six buildings have been acquired in 16 communities for approximately $132 million.

Renovations on the Grand Street property are expected to begin in February 2010, with occupancy targeted by mid-2010.

In 2009-10, the Province's budget for social housing is approximately $450 million, more than three times as much as in 2001.
