Vancouver youth gains self-confidence from employment program
January 12th, 2012
As she prepared to enter grade 11, Christina had a new-found
confidence acquired over the summer. She had spent the past seven
weeks working and volunteering with
Ray Cam Community Centre
as part of BC Housing’s
STEP to Work program.
The program helps youth who live in public housing
prepare for employment by providing a one-week training session
followed by a six-week paid job placement.
“I worked with Ray Cam’s day camp and
also took part in their Naskarz program where I learned to
fabricate and weld,” said Christina. “I
really enjoyed and benefited from the program. It helped me open up
and learn to communicate.”
As part of their training, program participants learn how to
prepare resumes as well as interviewing techniques. They also
receive training in CPR, standard first aid, FOODSAFE, WorldHost,
WHIMIS, and back awareness. “I feel more secure now
that I have those certificates,” added Christina.
“I feel I can excel in the workforce
now.”
