BC Housing is committed to incorporating green building standards in new builds. As part of our environmental sustainability plan, we have adopted a requirement that all new social housing projects be certified to a LEED Gold standard, and be designed to minimize greenhouse gas emissions by meeting the requirements of our “High Performance Greenhouse Gas Neutral Strategy”.

LEED Gold is the award given to buildings that meet the highest standards in sustainable design, construction and operation. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a green rating system that provides standards for environmentally sustainable construction. BC Housing’s High Performance Greenhouse Gas Neutral Strategy requires that projects meet a minimum energy performance target of approximately 50% less than standard construction and to minimize the use of energy sources high in greenhouse gas emissions.

Currently, 38 LEED Gold buildings and four LEED Silver projects are underway.
