Active and involved at age 90

Article from The Future of Housing and Care Supplement - December 2004

Next June, Esther turns 90. But she doesn’t feel old, and she says there are still lots of songs to be sung in her life story. Last year, Esther moved into a self-contained apartment at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg (of Baltimore) Residence in Vancouver. Fifteen suites in this assisted living development operated by the Louis Brier Home and Hospital receive rent supplements through the province’s Independent Living BC program.

Despite her youthful attitude, Esther was no longer able to live on her own. She tired easily and her hands shook, making it dangerous to try to cook. She heard about the brand new Weinberg Residence through friends but thought it would be too expensive for her.

“I couldn’t imagine that I could afford to live here,” she said. “But then I found out about the rent supplement program and that I was a likely candidate for it.”

At the Weinberg Residence, Esther has her own suite to call home and can also meet other seniors in the development’s common areas. All her meals are provided, she receives laundry and linen services, can join in on entertainment opportunities, and has access to 24-hour response. She pays 70 per cent of her after-tax income for her home. “It sounds expensive,” Esther said, “but you don’t have to pay for other things. I’m so lucky to have this.”

Esther participates in many of the development’s activities. “They always keep us entertained with music and monthly birthday parties,” she said smiling. “We go on outings, watch movies, and take walks through this lovely neighbourhood. I like to keep my mind active by helping out with bingo nights. Even my grandson and one of my great grandsons help with calling the numbers.”

Esther cannot say enough about how much she enjoys the benefits of assisted living. “It’s a great relief to be so well taken care of,” she said.
