
The Aboriginal Housing Initiative (AHI) provides funding to
develop new, affordable housing for Aboriginal people living
off-reserve. This initiative is part of
Housing Matters BC
, a provincial housing strategy, and helps
to ensure that Aboriginal housing needs are being
addressed.

On July 25, 2007, the Province of B.C. announced the
allocation of 292 units at 13 housing developments in 10
communities across the province under the Aboriginal
Housing Initiative. This initiative was launched in
March 2007 with a proposal call inviting Aboriginal non-profit
societies to help build new, affordable housing for Aboriginal
people living off-reserve. The proposal call
was funded through a $50.9 million grant from
the Off-Reserve Aboriginal Housing Trust, which had
been transferred from the Government of Canada to the
Province of B.C. The trust is bring administered in consultation
with Aboriginal Housing Management Association
. The goal of the proposal call was the
creation of 200 Aboriginal housing units.

The
Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA)
is the first and only Aboriginal social housing management
agency in Canada. It was formed in B.C. in the mid-1990s and
represents 14 Aboriginal housing associations across the
