Aboriginal Housing Initiative

The Aboriginal Housing Initiative (AHI) provides funding to develop new, affordable housing for Aboriginal people living off-reserve. This initiative is part of Housing Matters BC , a provincial housing strategy, and helps to ensure that Aboriginal housing needs are being addressed.

AHI allocation announcement
On July 25, 2007, the Province of B.C. announced the allocation of 292 units at 13 housing developments in 10 communities across the province under the Aboriginal Housing Initiative. This initiative was launched in March 2007 with a proposal call inviting Aboriginal non-profit societies to help build new, affordable housing for Aboriginal people living off-reserve. The proposal call was funded through a $50.9 million grant from the Off-Reserve Aboriginal Housing Trust, which had been transferred from the Government of Canada to the Province of B.C. The trust is bring administered in consultation with Aboriginal Housing Management Association .  The goal of the proposal call was the creation of  200 Aboriginal housing units.
