Program Overview
The Aboriginal Homeless Outreach Program aims to reduce the number of Aboriginals who are homeless by providing direct access to immediate housing with linkages to the necessary support services to address the homeless individual’s housing, health, and cultural needs. The program provides outreach services for chronically homeless, urban and rural Aboriginals who are living off-reserve. In particular, the program focuses on individuals who have been homeless for longer periods of time, or the street entrenched.

A disproportionate number of homeless individuals are Aboriginal, and outreach workers have indicated it is necessary to address this in a way that recognizes their unique cultural and social needs. The Province will provide $500,000 in annual funding to provide Aboriginal outreach services in eight communities across B.C. Each of the eight selected non-profit societies will receive $65,000 in funding to operate the Aboriginal Homeless Outreach Program in their community. The successful proponents will begin implementing outreach services in their respective communities in March 2008.
