Aboriginal housing factsA disproportionate number of Aboriginal households in B.C. are
in
core housing need
. According to the 2001 census, close to one-third of the
Aboriginals living off-reserve are in core housing need compared to
only 15.8 percent for all non-Aboriginal households. And 30 percent
of all the homeless found in Vancouver are Aboriginal (2005
Homeless Count). According to the
2006 Census , Aboriginal peoples
are three times as likely to live in a crowded dwelling and also
three times as likely to live in dwelling in need of repair. It is
for these reasons that the provincial housing strategy,
Housing Matters BC
, identified addressing Aboriginal housing needs as one of its
six key strategies
.
