How to apply to the Rental Assistance Program

To apply to the Rental Assistance Program, follow the step-by-step directions provided below.

STEP #1:  Confirm your eligibility
To confirm that you are eligible for the Rental Assistance Program, click here to view the eligibility criteria .

STEP #2: Complete an application form
There are three ways to obtain an application form for the Rental Assistance Program:

1. Click here to download a copy of the Rental Assistance Program application form . (This form is opened using Adobe Acrobat Reader software. Click the icon below to download this free of charge.)

2. If you do not have a printer, you can request a hard copy of the application form be sent to you by mail by completing an online request.

3. Pick up a copy of the Rental Assistance Program application form at any  BC Housing office.    

STEP #3:  Submit application with supporting documents
When applying for the Rental Assistance Program, the following must be provided with the application:

  • Proof of identity and citizenship for all family members;
  • Proof of rent: tenancy agreement; notice of rent increase; rent receipt; or written declaration from landlord confirming rental amount;
  • Income tax information for the previous year: copy of the Notice of Assessment; and detailed tax return;
  • A blank cheque marked "VOID" or preauthorized debit form for direct deposit of subsidy.

If BC Housing requires further information, you will be contacted.

STEP #4: Notify BC Housing of any changes
Please remember to inform BC Housing immediately if you move, your rent increases, your marital status changes, the number of people in your household changes, or if you are sharing your accommodation with other people. By providing this information promptly, we can adjust your assistance accordingly to avoid any possible overpayment.

Important notice
BC Housing will audit some recipients. If you apply and become a Rental Assistance recipient, you may be contacted and asked to prove your eligibility.

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act covers the collection and use of personal information in BC Housing's files.
