Seniors' Supportive Housing

Seniors’ Supportive Housing (SSH) provides accessible, affordable housing combined with quality support services to assist seniors in remaining independent longer.

Program overview
The Seniors' Supportive Housing program provides specially modified rental homes, in selected subsidized housing developments, primarily to low-income seniors who need some assistance in order to continue to live independently.  The program focuses on converting and upgrading existing seniors' housing to enhance accessibility and improve safety systems. It also introduces support services such as 24-hour response, light housekeeping, meals, and social and recreational activities.

The program is financed with the government’s Budget 2007 commitment of $45 million over four years to upgrade or convert up to 750 subsidized housing units to supportive housing. The Request for Proposal for approximately 300 units means that close to 800 housing units will be converted with the budget commitment.  Renovations are already underway at 13 subsidized housing developments, totalling about 590 housing units.

The Seniors' Supportive Housing program is designed to complement BC Housing’s other programs for seniors and individuals with disabilities and is situated on the housing continuum between transitional and assisted living, and independent social housing.
