
SROs are “single room
occupancy” hotels that provide long-term accommodation
in single rooms, typically without private bathrooms or kitchens.
The acquisiton of these buildings is
part of the Province’s housing
strategy,
Housing Matters BC
, and the purchase is the largest single investment ever
in this crucial type of housing stock.
Latest News
On February 14, 2008, the Province announced the purchase
of another six Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels with 330 units in
Vancouver to reduce homelessness and help protect affordable
housing stock for those most in need. Three of the purchases are
vacant buildings (Pender, Marr and Rainier), meaning these 115
units will be new affordable housing units added to the current
supply.
The purchase of the six buildings, all current or former SRO
hotels in the Downtown Eastside, means the Province has now bought
a total of 16 SRO hotels with 925 rooms in Vancouver, one SRO hotel
in Victoria with 28 units and one SRO in New
Westminster with 59 units over the past year.
