Family self sufficiency program

The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program is a pilot program that started in Victoria in 2002, and is based on similar, successful programs in the United States. In 2005, the program was expanded to include another 100 subsidized housing residents. The program helps families in the Capital Regional District achieve greater financial independence and self-sufficiency. Participants have the opportunity to:

  • Meet regularly with a family advisor.
  • Complete a course on financial management.
  • Attend monthly group meetings.
  • Develop an action plan to move from subsidized housing to other forms of housing.
The Burnside Gorge Community Association runs the Family Self-Sufficiency program, in partnership with Pacifica Housing Advisory Association.

BC Housing provides funding for this project, with additional support from the BC Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance and Vancity Credit Union.
