Affordable housing project breaks ground in Chilliwack
CHILLIWACK – A new affordable housing project in Chilliwack has taken another step forward, with a groundbreaking ceremony taking place for the 80-unit development at 45603 Yale Rd.

About the Project

Mamele’awt Qweesome Housing Society (MQHS) is the driving force behind this project. The Waterstone — formerly known as the Urban Village — will provide commercial space as well as housing units at 45603 Yale Road.

This development will have housing to meet the needs of various residents, including low-to-moderate income renters and Indigenous people.

The building will include amenity space, office space, a common room, community kitchen, heat treatment room, locker room, scooter/bicycle storage, exterior playground area, exterior gathering area, daycare, and commercial space.

Of the 80 units, 40 will be designated for people with disabilities. There will be:

  • 34 one-bedroom units
  • 32 two-bedroom unit
  • 12 three-bedroom units
  • 2 two-bedroom units

MQHS and To'o Housing Society will operate the housing development. Their goal is to create a diverse community that provides affordable rental housing for people in need.

MQHS will also operate the daycare. The Aboriginal Head Start Program is providing funding, which will create 25 new licensed daycare spaces (eight infant-toddler and 17 30-month-to-school-age).

Tenant support services will be offered through existing MQHS programs, as well as:

  • A health liaison worker working closely with tenants on health and wellness and to connect tenants directly with the Fraser Health Authority
  • An Aboriginal Community Connections worker providing community outreach, assessing needs, and placing appropriate tenants
  • Xolhemet Society providing individual on-site group support programs for women, as required

The project proposal was selected under the Investment in Housing Innovation program to respond to the rental housing demand in the City of Chilliwack for low-income families and singles.


Our partners for this Chilliwack project are Mamele'awt Qweesome Housing Society, the City of Chilliwack, and To'o Housing Society.

The B.C. government is providing $11 million in capital funding for the project.
