The community of Greenbrook has a mobile library that brings books right to their doorstep. But it’s more than just a van with books; it’s a way to bring people together and share the joy of reading.
Bringing books and more to the community
The Surrey Public Library’s Mobile Library visits the community once a month. It brings with it shelves of books and other items like video games, movies and board games. Since its launch in May 2024, interest in the Mobile Library has increased among the tenants at Greenbrook.
This Mobile Library captivates children and the interest from parents from the very beginning. It highlights a community-wide desire to explore and improve literacy. In a typical visit, between 25-30 community members may come to borrow materials with numbers growing.
Having grown up in that neighbourhood myself and now having kids of my own, I was inspired to find ways to build children’s literacy in a neighbourhood that, for over 20 years, is still struggling today. Initial attempts did not work until I called someone from the Surrey Public Library, and they immediately offered their mobile library. - Shaleen Pillay, a Tenant Engagement Worker
The library provides an easy way for families to get educational materials without having to travel far. Visitors to the van can get library cards on-site.
The library staff come with colouring books and activities like scavenger hunts. They also offer storytelling and even help with homework. They try to tailor their services to meet the needs of the Greenbrook community.
A father's journey to inspire his son's love for reading
A father had trouble motivating his son to read and finish homework. He teamed up with the library staff to figure out what his son liked and then set reading goals that felt doable.
Their collaboration made a big difference. At first, the son was unsure, but with support from his friends, he started exploring the library van with excitement.
His father was grateful and amazed to see how much his son began to enjoy reading.
Making literacy accessible for all at Greenbrook
The Mobile Library was designed to be fair and easy for everyone to use. The community appreciates the personalized support they get from the library staff.
This has been an amazing opportunity for my son who is on the spectrum. It's hard for us to take him to the library. With this service, he isn't confined. He can have access to books in a comfortable way that suits his needs best. He looks forward to the van coming around-almost like an ice cream truck! - Jay Masters, a tenant at Greenbrook
The Mobile Library was originally created with children in mind. However, it has become useful for parents as well. Many parents expressed a desire to improve their own literacy skills.
This has led to the inclusion of books and resources for adults. The library also offers free resources in various languages from service providers in the community.
There has been incredible positive feedback about the mobile library. Tenants have reported that their children are reading more and look forward to attending each session.
The mobile library at Greenbrook is more than just a van full of books. It brings fun, learning, and helpful resources right to the Greenbrook community. Whether it’s through a story, a colouring book, or a friendly smile from the library staff, each visit leaves something special behind.
