The Garden Fund provides start-up funding of up to $3,000 to BC Housing non-profit housing partners to build gardens and start garden programs at their buildings.

In addition, Garden Fund recipients will have access to phone support from BC Housing’s People, Plants, and Homes team for their first growing season.

How to apply

Complete the Garden Grant application online. For inquiries you can reach us at [email protected]. Due to the high volume of application we receive each year, we will not be able to accept pdf applications. We will only accept electronic application submitted via the online form.

Important dates

  • Deadline for applications: February 28, 2025
  • Recipients announced: April 5, 2025

Who will review and select the Garden Fund grant recipient?

A volunteer committee of BC Housing staff will evaluate applications and decide who will receive funding.

The committee will review and ensure that:

  • You have a plan and/or funding to maintain your garden after the first season
  • You have a realistic budget for your project
  • You have approval to build a garden from the landowner or management team
  • The scope of your project is doable
  • You have a plan in place to engage residents in the project

Responsibilities of non-profit providers once selected for the grant

Reward recipients will be asked to:

  • Provide BC Housing with stories, feedback and photos of their project
  • Sign a Memorandum of Understanding and return unused funds
  • Provide BC Housing with receipt of money spent
  • Participate in an online event at the end of the season to share your success stories with other funding recipients

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for multiple buildings?

Yes, we accept multiple application from the same organization for different buildings. Only one of your applications will be funded per year.

Can I apply again if I received funding last year?

Yes. Often organizations have multiple location and would like to start a garden at a different building. We will consider application for different buildings. We will not consider application for the same building if you were funded the previous year. 

Can I receive funding if I have an existing garden?

Yes, we do fund garden expansions, adding features like seating to create a gathering space to enhance engagement or programming in the garden, or significant repairs when gardens are no longer usable. 

Are there any gardening supplies that you do not fund?

Yes, we do not fund ongoing maintenance costs like seeds, soil, or plants for an existing garden. 

Can I apply for a building that is under development and has not been tenanted yet?

No, we will not fund projects at buildings that are not completed and tenanted. Please apply once your building is tenanted.
