Building more affordable seniors’ housing in Coquitlam

More than 150 new homes across two developments coming for seniors

Summary

  • 158 affordable rental homes are under construction across two projects in Coquitlam
  • The homes are for adults 55+ with low to moderate incomes, delivered through the Province’s Community Housing Fund

COQUITLAM - More seniors in Coquitlam will soon have access to safe, affordable homes, with construction underway on 158 new rental units across two developments.

“The seniors who helped shape our communities should have the option to stay in them,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “That is why we continue to build more affordable housing, making sure that seniors can remain close to family, friends and the services they count on, with the stability and dignity they deserve.”

The developments are a result of a partnership under the Community Housing Fund between the Province, through BC Housing, the City of Coquitlam, and S.U.C.C.E.S.S., an experienced non-profit housing provider that will own and operate the homes.

Building homes in growing neighbourhoods

The first development, at 290 Laval Square in Coquitlam’s historic Maillardville neighbourhood, will provide 42 homes in a three-storey building next to the Maillardville Community Centre. Residents will have access to the community centre’s services and programs that support active, healthy living.

The second development, at 443 Clayton St. in the growing Burquitlam-Lougheed neighbourhood, will deliver 116 homes in a six-storey building. Located within walking distance of Lougheed SkyTrain station, the site offers access to transit, shops and community amenities.

All homes are accessible or adaptable, helping seniors live comfortably and independently for longer.

These homes are part of a historic $19-billion housing investment by the B.C. government. Since 2017, the Province has more than 99,000 homes delivered or underway, including nearly 1,000 homes in Coquitlam.

Jennifer Blatherwick, MLA for Coquitlam-Maillardville –

“The homes that will soon open to seniors are more than just places to live. They represent an investment in their quality of life, helping ensure they can age in place comfortably, and strengthen the connections that make the community they call home so special. These projects reflect our commitment to creating communities where people can thrive at every stage of life.”

Jennifer Whiteside, MLA for New Westminster-Coquitlam –

“These homes will make a real difference for seniors in our community. More choices for affordable, independent living in the community are deeply needed, and this is another example of how we’re delivering for seniors so they can stay close to loved ones and the services they need.”

Richard Stewart, mayor, Coquitlam –

“Addressing the need for affordable housing requires leadership at every level, and municipalities have an important role to play. The result will be 158 affordable homes where seniors can age in place with dignity, independence and connection to the community they call home."
