BURNABY - Indigenous and non-Indigenous families and individuals, seniors and people living with disabilities will soon have access to more than 150 affordable rental homes in Burnaby.
"By investing in affordable homes, we are ensuring that communities remain liveable with affordable options for growing families and individuals working in the area," said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing. "Burnaby is one of the fastest-growing communities in B.C. and we've stepped up to meet that demand with our commitment to build 1,500 new affordable homes by 2026."
Construction is underway on 130 new affordable rental homes at 6488 Byrnepark Dr. and 25 additional new affordable rental homes will be opening at 7898-18 Ave., Burnaby.
The building at 6488 Byrnepark Dr. will be six storeys and contain a mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units for Indigenous and non-Indigenous families and individuals with low or moderate incomes.
Rents will be a mix of rent geared to income where residents pay 30% of their income for rent, market rates, and deep-subsidy rates for people on income assistance. Construction is expected to be complete in 2026.
M'akola Housing Society will own and operate the building. The development will also feature underground parking, an indoor amenity room and outdoor spaces, which will include a playground, dog run and gathering space for people living in the building.
The project at 7898-18 Ave., called Eunice Oh Residence, is a low-rise building featuring studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Tenants are expected to begin moving into the building in early June 2024.
Eunice Oh Residence will be operated by The New Vista Society, which aims to blend families, seniors and individuals from a variety of backgrounds to create a vibrant and supportive community. Eunice Oh Residence offers a mix of low-end market rents for households with moderate incomes, rent geared to income for households, and shelter-rate homes for vulnerable seniors, families and individuals.
Along with these two buildings, the Province, through BC Housing, has invested in essential upgrades and repairs to the New Vista Place and Ernest Winch Tower developments located at 7210 and 7216 Mary St., Burnaby. The affordable housing is home to 348 independent seniors in the area. The majority of homes have rents geared to income.
Essential upgrades to the buildings include upgrades to the tower's elevators, boilers, windows, lighting, fire-alarm system, emergency generators and the exteriors of the towers, extending the life of the buildings by an additional 30 years.
The projects are part of a $19-billion housing investment by the B.C. government. Since 2017, the Province has more than 78,000 homes delivered or underway, including more than 3,500 homes in Burnaby.

6488 Byrnepark Dr.:
- The Province, through BC Housing, is investing $23.5 million.
- The federal government, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, is contributing $10.6 million through the Affordable Housing Fund.
- The City of Burnaby owns the land valued at $13 million and is leasing it to M'akola at a nominal fee.
- The city is also contributing $1.4 million in waived fees.
- Metro Vancouver is contributing approximately $550,000 in waived fees.
Eunice Oh Residence (7898-18 Ave.):
- The Province, through BC Housing, provided approximately $2.5 million from the Building BC: Community Housing Fund, as well as approximately $133,000 in annual operating funding.
- $1 million was contributed through joint funding under Canada-British Columbia Bilateral Agreement, National Housing Strategy.
- The City of Burnaby provided the land assessed at more than $2.5 million and is leasing it to The New Vista Society at a nominal rate.
- The city is also contributing approximately $1.2 million in municipal and regional waived fees.
New Vista Place and Ernest Winch Tower (7210 and 7216 Mary Ave.):
- The Province, through BC Housing, is investing $13.6 million for essential repairs and upgrades to the New Vista Place Tower and Ernest Winch Tower through the Capital Renewal Fund.
