VICTORIA - More people will find their place in a community they love as B.C. continues rolling out new innovations that are making it easier and faster to build affordable homes, helping contribute to the decline in the asking price for rent in communities throughout B.C.
A new online platform called DASH, Digitally Accelerated Standardized Housing, is helping developers and non-profit organizations design and construct three- to six-storey buildings more quickly and at lower cost using products manufactured in B.C.
"Innovative programs are supercharging our work to deliver the homes that people need and help to drive down asking rents," said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. "For families, seniors and workers throughout our province, this means they will be turning a key and walking through the doorway of their new home sooner. We're tackling economic uncertainty head on in B.C. by building more homes faster."
According to Rentals.ca's Nov. 6, 2025, report, asking rents in B.C. dropped more than anywhere else in Canada, with prices down by 9.6% over the past two years and 5.8% in the past year alone. By cracking down on speculation, investing in affordable housing, cutting red tape and encouraging two consecutive years of record-breaking purpose-built rental construction in B.C., government is delivering results for people. DASH will ensure that government can continue to increase the number of homes available to help continue the trend of reduced asking rents.
DASH uses modern building methods, such as prefabricated parts and standardized designs, to speed up the process and reduce expenses. The first-in-Canada platform will also help builders access B.C.-made materials from throughout the province, adding jobs and helping build homes that are driving B.C.'s prosperity. This supports B.C.'s Look West industrial and economic strategy, which emphasizes construction innovation as an important sector in strengthening the province's economic security in the face of threats and making B.C. the economic powerhouse of Canada.
Additionally, the Province is working with local governments to improve the approval process and simplify building permit requirements. These efforts include digital permitting tools and automated checks for building code compliance. New construction techniques, such as mass timber and off-site building, are helping reduce waste and deliver homes faster.
Innovation is a cornerstone of the Homes for People Plan, through which the Province has more than 93,600 homes delivered or underway in B.C. since 2017.

- Vancouver asking rents reached a 43-month low in October 2025, falling 11.4% over the past three years and declining on an annual basis for a 23rd consecutive month.
- In Surrey, the asking rent for a one bedroom compared to this time last year is down 12%.
- The DASH online platform supports the entire building process, from design and zoning review to construction. Usually, these actions are done in isolation, but DASH weaves all the pieces using digital tools.

How does DASH work?
- DASH replaces traditional review and construction methods with a modern, industrialized approach built around standardized building components and designs, digital co-ordination and prefabrication.
- For example, developers, builders or non-profit organizations designing a wood-frame, multi-family structure can enter details, including land parcel shape and size, planned building storeys, unit bedroom counts, and so on.
- If the local municipality has signed on, the DASH platform will provide relevant zoning regulations and show how to efficiently use land to deliver housing using the DASH components and blueprints.
- The result is a 3D design and plan for the building that can be generated on the platform, available within minutes and optimized for the parcel of land.
- The platform is open source, with no user-access fees.
- The platform also translates the design into off-site manufacturing components and provides examples of companies with capacity to produce the relevant DASH kit of parts.
How was DASH developed?
- BC Housing worked with a core project team since 2024, including Metro Vancouver, over a dozen B.C.-based architects and engineers and 13 prefabricated home manufacturers, focused on initial blueprint development and creating an inventory of standardized low-carbon timber panel products.
- An advisory leadership council comprised of a cross-section of industry and government was established in early 2025 to provide advice and guidance as DASH continues to expand and enhance capabilities.
- In early 2025, BC Housing launched the initial DASH 1.0 platform, a set of publicly available tools to standardize and accelerate the delivery of three- to six-storey, wood-frame buildings: https://www.acceleratedhousing.ca/
- Planning and zoning regulations have been uploaded into the rules-based generator for partnering Metro Vancouver municipalities.
How was DASH funded?
- DASH received funding from CMHC's Housing Supply Challenge, which awarded BC Housing $4 million to support development and launch of the platform.
- BC Housing is exploring additional funding to support continued use and evolution of the DASH platform.
- As part of this process, BC Housing has reached out to the federal government and federal agencies to explore funding opportunities that would support continued development of DASH for use by the Province, and hopefully for uptake throughout Canada.
