Project overview
BC Housing is opening a new, year-round shelter at 2245 6th Avenue.
The building will include:
- 20 beds
- Indoor and outdoor common areas
- Central kitchen
- Washroom and laundry facilities
- Fenced grounds with on-site vehicle and bicycle parking
Once open, this new shelter will replace the temporary winter shelter at 1660 Columbia Avenue.
Shelters offer free, immediate places to stay for adults (19+) who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. A guest may stay in a shelter space for one night to a few months or longer. Shelter staff work with each guest to help them move toward stable, permanent housing.
Typical supports include:
- Bed and bedding
- Shared washrooms and laundry facilities
- Daily meals
- 24/7 onsite staff support
- Personalized case planning
- Referrals to health care, housing and other community services
Supports and services are for registered shelter guests only.
BC Housing selected Castlegar Community Services (formerly known as Castlegar & District Community Services Society) to operate this building. Staff will manage the building and provide services to supportive housing residents and shelter guests.
