Project overview
BC Housing plans to build a new shelter and supportive housing at 925 Braidwood and Ryan Road in Courtenay.
The shelter building will have about 73 beds. It can also add up to 30 more beds during extreme weather.
The supportive housing building will include about 70 small studio homes. These homes are for people from the local area who need support to stay housed.
Both buildings will have shared indoor spaces and outdoor areas. They will also include dining rooms, laundry rooms, and office space for staff. The site will be fenced and will have parking on-site.
Supportive housing is subsidized housing with on-site supports. Residents are adults (19+) who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness. This can include seniors and people with disabilities.
All residents apply to live in supportive housing, sign program agreements and pay rent.
Typical supports include:
- 24/7 staffing
- Daily meals
- Life skills and employment training
- Access to health supports
- Connections to community services
To learn more, check out our Stories from Supportive Housing playlist on YouTube. These short videos show inside several supportive housing buildings. They also share stories from residents, staff and neighbours.
Shelters offer free, immediate places to stay for adults (19+) who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. A guest may stay in a shelter space for one night to a few months or longer. Shelter staff work with each guest to help them move toward stable, permanent housing.
Typical supports include:
- Bed and bedding
- Shared washrooms and laundry facilities
- Daily meals
- 24/7 staff support
- Personalized case planning
- Referrals to health care, housing and other community services
Supports and services are for registered shelter guests only.
BC Housing selected Lookout Housing and Health Society to operate the Supportive housing and Connective to operate the shelter. Staff will manage the individual buildings and provide services to residents and shelter guests.
