Project overview
BC Housing is planning to build up to 35 new homes at 355 Nicol Street.
The 5-storey residential apartment building will include:
- Up to 35 studio homes with support services (supportive housing)
Indoor common areas - Central kitchen and laundry facilities
- Reception area and office space for staff
- Outdoor areas that reflect Indigenous perspectives (Indigenous plantings, a water feature and communal spaces)
This development is part of two Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreements between BC Housing, the Snuneymuxw First Nation (SFN) and the City of Nanaimo.
These homes will be offered first to Snuneymuxw members, then to other First Nation, Métis and Inuit people. If homes are available, BC Housing and SFN will work together to identify opportunities for potential non-Indigenous residents.
Supportive housing is subsidized housing with on-site supports. Residents are adults (19+) who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness. This can include seniors and people with disabilities.
All residents apply to live in supportive housing, sign program agreements and pay rent.
Typical supports include:
- 24/7 staffing
- Daily meals
- Life skills and employment training
- Access to health supports
- Connections to community services
To learn more, check out our Stories from Supportive Housing playlist on YouTube. These short videos show inside several supportive housing buildings. They also share stories from residents, staff and neighbours.
Snuneymuxw First Nation will operate this housing. Staff will manage the building and provide services to residents.
We commit to being good neighbours. We will share any updates about this project as soon as they are available.
We will share a direct phone number for the building when it opens and address any concerns quickly and collaboratively.
